How we're funded

Birthday Book is free to use. When you follow a gift link from the app or these guides and buy something, the retailer may pay us a small commission. It never costs you more — the commission comes out of the retailer's side, not yours.

Commissions never decide what we suggest. Gift ideas are chosen by what fits the person — their age, interests, country and season. We link to the mainstream local retailer in the recipient's country whether or not they pay us, and plenty of our links (Takealot in South Africa, for instance) earn us nothing at all.

Today we earn nothing from any gift link — we are not yet part of any affiliate programme. As Birthday Book grows we expect to join some, and to agree commissions directly with the small shops and makers we feature. When that happens a link may carry a tracking reference so the retailer knows the visit came from us; no personal information about you or the gift recipient is ever included, and this page will say plainly who we earn from.

Ideas the app came up with itself are marked the book's pick, and anything a relative added carries their name instead — so you can always tell a machine's idea from a family member's. The book's picks are written by AI from real product listings; the family's words are always their own.
